You are a Perpetual Tourist is a series of sixty-two short (and micro) experimental documentaries exploring ideas of longing and distance between children and adult family members in public space as expressed through gesture.
The book Longing & Distance: through gesture is a companion piece.

You are a Perpetual Tourist is a fixed series of sixty-two short and micro experimental documentaries developed during my MFA at Alfred University. The project was first organized under the title An Infinite Ordered Set of Events; the same sixty-two videos were later titled You are a Perpetual Tourist.
Footage was gathered across Tucson, Chicago, New York, Panama, Chile, Argentina, and Miami. The videos attend to gestures between children and adult family members in public space rather than relying on spoken explanation. Across unrelated locations and encounters, small movements between bodies recur while the circumstances around them remain distinct.
During my thesis review, a committee member asked what was absent from the videos. That question led to Longing & Distance: through gesture (2008), a later language-based layer of the project. Rather than explaining the videos, the book approaches what the moving-image work left unspoken through writing, image, and gesture.
The series was presented in my MFA thesis exhibition at Fosdick-Nelson Gallery, Alfred, New York, April 19–22, 2008.
Several videos from the fixed series later circulated independently in exhibitions and festivals, including The Delay (originally 048), Interruptions, PUSH, and El train to el tigre, among others.
